WOKSSA Tag Rugby Festival 2008
Updated: May 17, 2008 10:51 AM

On Thursday 8th May, the Tunbridge Wells School Sports Partnership held the 2008 WOKSSA Tag Rugby Festival at Cranbrook Rugby Club. 26 teams entered in total from 20 different primary schools.

Each school that attended was given a country to represent for the afternoon. Teams were given ideas of how to represent their country they were assigned and came along dressed up, faces painted and banners held high! Some even brought poems and chants and one team even played the national anthem of France whilst playing!

Cranbrook Rugby Club provided the referees for the festival and behind the scenes a number of club members had done a fantastic job in the lead up to the festival to ensure that everything was prepared for the afternoon. Even the bar was open for parents to enjoy the san and for the children to keep hydrated with plenty of water.

After the initial registration and briefing, teams were placed into groups of four to play the first round of matches in a mini league format. Winners and Runners up then went into Group 7 and 8 of the festival which would then lead into the outcome of the finalists.

Teams played each other in a mini league format again in round two and the teams winning groups 7 and 8 automatically went through to the grand final to compete for the local festival winners’ shield which guaranteed a place at the Kent County Finals in June which is also been run as this years Kent School Games final competition.

Tenterden and Headcorn both won their groups and headed into the final match. Tenterden who had played outstanding rugby throughout the festival continued their excellent form and eventually beat a good Headcorn side in difficult hot conditions.

Headcorn were awarded the Fair Play trophy and will now take their place at the Kent County Fair Play Finals. St Michaels were awarded the Spirit of Rugby Award for their representation of France.

A huge thank you to Cranbrook Rugby Club, all of the Tunbridge Wells School Sports Partnership staff and sports leaders from Angley School that helped to ensure the afternoon was a great success.
