Bennett Memorial girls won the inaugural Secondary Schools Rugby Tag Festival, run by Tunbridge Wells Rugby Club, held at St Mark’s Recreation Ground on Tuesday 28 April.  They were closely pressed by Beechwood, and both teams played with some style and knowledge of the game, partly gained from their experience in playing the game at Primary School level.

The Festival involved schools from Maidstone and Cranbrook, with Angley School providing three sides.  The Fair Play Award was won by New Line Learning Academy, Maidstone.

Tunbridge Wells RFC is committed to encouraging its local Secondary Schools to promote the playing of Tag Rugby throughout the year groups.  The girls have excelled at the game in their Primary Schools, but have previously had no opportunity to continue playing the game at their senior schools.

“This initiative is now being extended County wide, and two further Festivals are taking place in other areas, culminating in a County Final later in the summer.  We are working closely with our colleagues, Phil Gower (TWSSP) and Laura Rookard (Kent Schools Sports Partnerships)” says Andie Parry (TWRFC Secondary School Liaison Officer).  “We strongly believe that there will be considerable growth in Secondary School Girls’ Tag Rugby over the next few years, which could well rival the enormous success of Primary School Tag Rugby.  It will also hopefully provide a strong recruiting base from which to develop a Ladies Section at Tunbridge Wells Rugby Club.  I look forward to more Tunbridge Wells Schools joining this initiative in the coming year”.
