On Thursday July 19, 10 teams from 9 different primary schools competed in the primary schools WOKSSA Athletics festival run by the Tunbridge Wells School Sports Partnership. The glorious weather added to the great atmosphere and competition.

Each primary school was asked to invite 2 students identified as being gifted and talented in PE and school sport. 32 students attended in total from the following schools; Cranbrook, Headcorn, Staplehurst, St Peters, Colliers Green, Wittersham, Goudhurst, St Augustines, Claremont, St James Juniors, Tenterden Juniors, Rolvenden, Sissinghurst, Frittenden and Benenden.

The theme was the Six Nations Rugby Tournament which was currently taking place and all cross curricular activities focused on invasion games.

Timetable of Events

Day 1

• Multi-Skills Practical Session; themed around invasion games and utilizing a rugby ball
• Physical Skills analysis required for rugby; physical, mental and individual sports specific skills required, discussion of player positions – analysis of what is required for each position
• Practical invasion games coaching session
• Geography; Rugby World Cup 2003 – 2007, where is Rugby played in the world

Day 2

• Multi-Skills Practical Session; progression from day 1
• History of the game of rugby; the origins of the sports, the Six Nations, the World Cup and the Women’s game
• Design a promotional poster
• Practical invasion games coaching session
• Nutrition; suggested diet for Rugby Players and an understanding of the key components

Day 3

• Visit from Harlequins Players Mike Ross and Tom Williams - Coaching Session
• History and Demonstration of the Haka war dance
• Six Nations TAG Rugby Tournament; teams dressed up in their country’s colours
• Local Rugby Club Scene; Cranbrook and Tunbridge Wells
• Presentations – certificates and prizes awarded

The students had a fantastic week and put a tremendous amount of effort and enthusiasm into everything that was asked of them. Thank you to the TWSSP staff for organising the event and to Harlequins Rugby Club for their support.
