The Step into Sport Leadership Project follows the publication of "A Sporting Future for All", the Government's Plan to support the development of a leadership and volunteering project to help more young people become involved in volunteering in their local community.
Sports Leaders Uk, Youth Sport Trust and Sport England have been contracted by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the Home Office Active Communities Fund as the consortium to manage this project, building upon their current work within the area of leadership and volunteering.
At a local level in Kent the project is being delivered through existing School Sport Partnerships, supported by Kent Active Sports.
There are four elements to the program:
- Sport Education (delivered within curriculum time)
- Leadership Training (delivered through schools)
- Top Link (primary schools festivals organised by young leaders)
- Volunteering (80 young leaders undertaking community volunteering placements accredited at 50, 100 and 200 hours)
Many schools within the partnership are now running the Junior Sports Leaders Award (JSLA) and Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA). Young sports leaders are actively working in many primary schools and community clubs, coaching young children and using their skills and enthusiasm to promote sport and healthy life styles.
Sports leaders are also a wonderful resource in supporting the festivals run by the partnership in local schools and clubs. Their energy, attitude and maturity form the basis of our work with younger children, developing new skills in a variety of sports and a life long desire to lead active, healthy lives.
Please contact the Partnership Development Manager (01580 720840) for further details on how to support a young sports leader working within your school or club.
