New Age Kurling at St Matthew’s

After being inspired at the New Age Kurling the children at St Matthew’s Primary School decided to run their own Intra-school Kurling Competition during lunchtimes.
Mrs Aspinall announced in assembly that there would be a Kurling Competition run in school and that children had to enter in teams of four if they wanted to compete.
Eleven teams went into the hat for the first round draw with one lucky team being awarded a bye.
A list of fixtures was created and displayed on Mrs Aspinall’s classroom door. The children were reminded when their matches were to be played in assembly and they were encouraged to keep checking the notices on her classroom door.
As New Age Kurling games are pretty quick it was decided that every match would be the best of three ends, an end being when both teams had thrown eight stones to get a score.
There was time to play two matches during a Wednesday lunchtime so all four teams had the chance to practice before their fixtures.
When the children arrived they were asked to create names for their teams and when they were all ready it was time to begin.
Each player in the team threw two stones at the target each. Any stones on the target after every member of the team had thrown scored points. We used the yellow targets as the children would score something even if their stone was just on.
It took the players a couple of turns to start thinking about tactics and the order that they should throw their stones. Those players that threw too hard were chosen to throw first to minimise the risk of them knocking scoring stones off the target and the players with a more accurate throw went last to make best use of their precision.
