St Matthew's Primary Sports Leaders Update
Updated: February 29, 2008 5:07 PM

The Primary Sports Leaders at St Matthew's Primary School have now been running lunchtime clubs for half term. During that time we have been making changes to improve and support their activities.

The Primary Sports Leaders meet regularly with the Primary Link Teacher and the School Sports Coordinator to feedback on how they think their clubs are going and to discuss any problems they are encountering which can then be acted upon.

The Primary Sports Leaders now have a timetable so that they know when they are running a club and to open the activities to every year group at the school.

Here are their thoughts on being Young Leaders:

"Being a sports leader is great fun we get to teach and help other children. We are often praised and thanked. I would say that being a sports leader is hard work and there were many training sessions but they paid of when it came to actually teaching and playing with the class. When Mr luck was training us we did many different stages such as …co-operating, listening and practicing. I enjoy playing with the year threes because they are always ready to listen and are often eager to join in the fun but sometimes they can be quite a handful. We play games with the children such as basketball, netball, football, dodge ball and lots more.

To any one else who wishes to be a sports leader I would just say that it isn’t as easy as it looks and that I have never had so much fun at lunch time" Christa Boughton.

"At the end of yr 5 in St Matthew’s school, several candidates signed up for a certain sport leader association. All those that joined were chosen to teach younger children more about certain sports. We first started off with books and we listed the important features of being a sport leader and we made a slogan called ‘step’. Each letter stands for a word for, example s for space, t for time, e for equipment and p for pace. Then after that we started playing with the yr 3‘s and teaching them hockey, football, netball and basketball. I started teaching older children in the school and to older pupils highly recommend it in the future" Connor Sutherland

"Near the end of year five, I signed up for a course called Sports Leaders. I didn’t know what we would be doing, but I knew it would be good fun, as a lot of my friends had signed up for it too.
We all started off with just books and writing what we would be doing, and codes like “S.T.E.P” which stands for “Space, Time, Equipment and People.” (I think…) and after a couple of weeks, we got to teach small games and then building up to small lessons for the Y3’s. After all of this, when we were in year six, we started doing sports leaders outside at lunchtime. Overall, the training lasted 16 weeks. I think it was a great experience and I would advise anyone in the future to definitely consider doing it"
