Overview
Fifteen Y12 students from Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys are currently undertaking the Level 1 Award in Community Sports Leadership. The award gives people aged 16 and over the skills needed to lead groups in safe sporting and recreational activity.
It encourages participants to take responsibility for others, develops organisational and communication skills and instils confidence in people for whom leading groups in sporting activities is a new experience.

The majority of the course is practical in nature with an emphasis on learning through doing, rather than through written work.
The benefits are obvious. Sports Leaders from Angley School have clocked up over two thousand hours of voluntary work in sport over the previous three years with some using their experience to enter both the teaching and coaching professions.
Course Structure
The Community Sports Leader Award syllabus is divided into eight units which can be found on the Sports Leaders UK website
To qualify as a Community Sports Leader, all units must be satisfactorily completed.
During CSLA training the students have been learning how to plan, organise and deliver sports activity sessions.

They have been taught how to run warm ups, develop skills related activities and referee small sided games before putting what they have learnt into practice by running sports activities for their peers.
During these sessions the students have been taught how to effectively communicate with a group and how to establish and maintain a safe sporting activity.
These skills will continue to be developed as the students prepare to organise sports activities in primary schools and become more involved in the running of sporting events and competitions.

The students must also complete 10 hours of voluntary leadership experience to achieve the award.
