Children at St James’ Junior School were unsure of what to expect when Mr Luck arrived with a huge bag over his shoulder. The looked even more intrigued as he began to place lots of brightly coloured cups onto the desk in front of him and set up what looked like a huge electronic clock.
They were about to enter the world of Speedstacking!
With a WOKSSA Speedstacking approaching, pupils from the school were being shown what Speedstacking was all about and how the complete the various stacks.
The pupils were transfixed as Mr Luck went through several routines with the cups a blur in front of him. Trepidation turned to excitement as they were given the opportunity to have a go themselves and proved very popular amongst those who had attended.
After being shown how to complete the 3, 3, 3 stack the children were shown how to do the 6, 6 stack. Those successfully using both hands alternately to place the cups found they were finishing much faster than those who weren’t.

Over the coming week the children continued to practice and were now using the timer to record how fast they were completing the stacks. The children competed in a qualifying tournament to see who would be representing the school at the WOKSSA Festival, each being given three attempts to record the fastest time.
In the week leading up to the Festival several children practised using the class teacher’s set of cups during their lunch and break times, Speedstacking had proven to be very popular.
Since attending the Festival, where one of the pupils reached a final after only one week of practice, the school has now invested in their own class set of cups and timing mats so that all the children have the chance to experience the sport through sessions run by Mr Luck. It is hoped that in future the school will run its own intra-school events as well as attending the TWDPSSA Speedstacking Festival.
