Twenty eight pupils from Benenden and Lamberhurst primary schools recently participated in a pilot Yr6 leadership program with SSCo’s from the Tunbridge Wells School Sports Partnership.

After making formal applications to join the program, they received training during lunchtimes to help develop their communication, organization and leadership skills. The course gave them practical ideas for sports activities they could run with younger children at their schools. After the course, the Yr6 leaders were encouraged to meet in small groups and decide on clubs to run for Key Stage 1 children during break and lunch times. They budgeted for, and ordered, resources and advertised their clubs during assemblies.

The clubs covered a wide range of skills and almost all Key Stage 1 children attended at least one club per week. Their enthusiasm was unbounded and their coaching skills outstanding. Yr6 leaders at Benenden Primary School also helped to run and manage a Key Stage 1 Sports Day where all Key Stage 1 children took part in a carousel of activities. Year 6 Leaders were generous with praise and encouragement, which reflected positively on the KS1 children they were coaching. They showed excellent maturity and were extremely dedicated to their responsibilities as a young leader. At the end of the term the Yr6 leaders awarded certificates and rewards to the children in their clubs. It was an extremely positive exercise for everyone involved and one that we will definitely repeat this year.
